You can let the DVLA know that your vehicle has been scrapped online here: https://www.gov.uk/written-off-vehicle. To do so, you will need your insurance company’s name and postcode, your vehicle registration number and the 11 digit reference number from your car’s log book. You must notify the DVLA as soon as possible when you scrap your car. If you do not notify them, you can be fined £1000.
The only things you’re required to provide at the time of vehicle collected is the car’s log books and your ID.
It is still possible to have your car scrapped if you do not have the log book for it. However, without the log book, scrapping the car may be a bit more complicated. Legally, you must contact the DVLA in writing to inform them on the scrapping. You will not be able to do so online. If you have lost the log book and would rather have it before you scrap your car, you can apply for a new one from the DVLA for £25.
Firstly, the battery is removed from the vehicle and is recycled. All the hazardous fluids are then drained and stored for safe disposal and recycling. Tyres are removed and examined. Any reusable parts are taken from vehicle for resale. Lastly the vehicle is crushed and sent to a metal merchant for further processing.
You do have the option to keep any parts from your car before it gets scrapped. To keep a personalised registration plate from a car that is getting scrapped, you must notify the authorities that the plate will be taken off a vehicle. You can notify them by filling out a V317 form here. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-to-transfer-or-retain-a-vehicle-registration-number
There is no need for you to prepare your car in any way before it gets scrapped. All that you are required to do is remove any personal belongings and make sure the car is accessible for us to pick up.
